Note: Beyond Beauty

Friedrich Nietzsche remarked that when a man destroys something that appears ugly, the world hails him as a hero; yet when he harms something that appears beautiful, the same world condemns him as evil.

The act itself may not be very different—yet the judgment changes. This is how beauty governs perception: we see, we feel, we judge, and from that judgment we act.

In truth, harm exists in both cases. Still, we do not regard the actions as the same; our bias toward appearance shapes our moral verdict. Was the action just? One cannot say with certainty. Is it possible to act rightly—or nearly so—by seeing beyond attraction and aversion, and acting instead from awareness?

It becomes possible when one learns to look beyond the sheaths.

Meditation cultivates this awareness: an awareness of seeing itself. With such awareness, one begins to see through the layers rather than merely at them.

From this deeper seeing arises a different kind of action—one not driven by liking or disliking, but one in awareness. Such action may be the closest we come to what is truly right.

There is a story from the life of Adi Shankaracharya. Once, as he walked along a path, an outcaste stood before him. Being a revered Brahmin, Shankaracharya asked the man to step aside to avoid contact.

The outcaste smiled and asked, “Whom do you wish to move—the body, or the Self within? Are you seeing merely the outer sheath, or the deeper reality?”

Struck by the truth of the question, Shankaracharya bowed to him.

There is something beyond mere sensory perception. When one beholds that deeper reality, one’s actions arise from truth rather than prejudice—and in such action, one remains free.

From Lao Tzu (Tao de Ching) :

When people see some things as beautiful,

other things become ugly.

When people see some things as good,

other things become bad.
