Descending Into Sorrow: The Path to Ultimate Joy

Some other day, a few people came to me seeking solace after the death of a family member. They came, they sat, they spoke the usual words—but it was evident that no one was truly touched. The offering of consolation had become a mere formality. Watching this, it became clear that only when sorrow is felt deeply, intensely, can a person’s spiritual destination change, can a life take a radically different direction. Only through the full realisation of sorrow does true inner peace come into being.

Now, look at the story of Gautami. Her grief was real—not borrowed, not ritualistic, but alive and burning. And because her sorrow was real, Buddha changed both her path and her destination. From this, one begins to see on the spiritual journey that it is the extreme depth of sadness that opens the door to lasting joy, and it is the conscious realisation of the ultimate that opens the door to truth.

Buddha touched the very nature of human suffering. He did not avoid it; he walked through it. He walked the path of truth and directly experienced that truth. From this deep contemplation comes an important insight: the common statement that one should stay away from sorrow is born out of fear. In reality, one should stay away only from an incomplete experience of sorrow.

There is no need to run away from grief, and there is no need to drown in it either. One has to enter into it fully, with conscious awareness. Just as there is neither escape from the sea nor true enjoyment of it by merely refusing to drink its waters, one must descend into its depths, because it is only at the deepest point that the jewels are found. In the same way, one must descend into sorrow if one is to awaken and arrive at ultimate joy. From the Diary of Suvvidhi
