The Futility of Effort: How to Truly Find God Within

Today, a gentleman came to me, deeply eager to find God. He asked when the divine presence would finally reveal itself. He said he had been searching for a long time, yet nothing had been achieved—no sign, no response. I listened attentively, and yet I was struck with surprise. One often finds the very thing one is truly after. The one who already rests within us—the essence of self-realization—is being searched for; what is hidden within the womb itself is being sought elsewhere.

An attempt to find that which is regarded as infinite is, in itself, to place a question mark upon its infinitude. The pursuit of this infinite becomes laborious and, therefore, impossible. Its realization does not lie in effortful attainment, but in the total dedication of one’s being. The futility of mental effort reveals itself only when the effort ceases. Reality becomes clearer in the complete relaxation of striving, which is the heart of true meditation.

All such efforts are not meant to reach God; rather, they serve as instruments for affirming one’s spiritual ego. Ego does not bridge distances—it preserves boundaries. What is required is not labour, but dedication; not mental gymnastics, but a genuine spiritual thirst.

Those who are truly thirsty leap directly into the well without searching for rope or bucket. This may appear strange, yet it is profoundly true. No elaborate etiquette is required—only simplicity and spontaneity. Divine union cannot be attained through labour; one only grows weary in the attempt. From the Diary of Suvvidhi
